by Mr. Sedricke Lapuz

Link to the Original Article

The Department of Biology celebrates its 20th year of institution with weeklong festivities in the upcoming Biology Week 2011. This year, the DB chose as its theme “The Forest: Our Last Stand Against Climate Change,” going along with the declaration of 2011 as the International Year of the Forest, and at the same time recognizing the ecosystem’s importance in our fight against changing global climate.

There will be a handful of activities, starting with the official Opening Ceremonies on August 23, 2011, Tuesday, which will start the ball rolling for the rest of August’s last week. This will also open the BioExhibit, a showcase of collages interpreting the BioWeek’s theme, especially created by non-Biology majors.

The 2nd BioCinema follows at 11:00 AM on the same day. This year, it will feature the Cinemalaya 2008 full-length entry Brutus: Ang Paglalakbay by director Tara Illenberger. The movie tells the story of two Mangyan children amidst the backdrop of illegal logging in the province of Mindoro. It will start screening at 1:00 PM at the Little Theater. Other films chosen for this year include the Leonardo DiCaprio-produced documentary film The 11th Hour (11:00 AM) and Hayao Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke (3:00 PM).Tickets are available at the Department of Biology.

On Wednesday, the BioSeminar will feature two speakers: Dr. Neil Aldrin Mallari, the Country Director for Flora and Fauna International, and Denise Fontanilla, representative of Haribon Foundation. They will discuss their organizations’ efforts to curb deforestation at the Little Theater starting at 9:00 AM.

Simultaneously, the BioQuiz, a quiz bee for high school students sponsored by the Department and student organization Biological Sciences Society, will hold its elimination rounds (9:00 AM at GAB-102), weeding down the competitors for the exciting finals scheduled at 1:00 PM at the Little Theater.

And finally, on Friday, the Biogyugan, a variety show-cum-competition, culminates the BioWeek with a sure extravaganza of brazen talent and creativity from the Biology majors. Show starts at 1:00 PM at the Little Theater.

Moving to a new blog URL

Based on a memo disseminated at the University of the Philippines System which urges the strict implementation of using the title “Professor” to address faculty who have ranks of Associate Professor, Full Professor and Professor Emeritus, I’m moving to http://santiagoata.edublogs.org as I am only ranked as Assistant Professor. I shall be informing all students concerned regarding updates on the new site. Thank you.

First semester message

Welcome to another semester at UP Manila!

Pages for BIO25: Vertebrate Anatomy & Physiology and BIO173: General Parasitology have been created; both are still under construction.
I have decided to do away with all my course-specific Yahoo groups and will begin the transfer of lecture slides, notes & course outlines to this site. Please bear with the snail-like pace since I will also be updating my lectures ppts in the process.

Bear in mind that your presence in class outweighs having complete access to my lecture notes, especially since the powerpoint presentations do not contain everything you need to know to pass any of the courses you are taking under me. Attendance is part of your course grade.
